My game from the Ludum Dare 31 Game Jam. Part of an ongoing attempt to make a 4X game that plays in a 10 minutes and doesn't involve micromanagement.

The Forty

After doing Ludum Dare 30 with my nephew Dominic in August, I decided to take part solo this time.

I've been playing with an idea for a Civilization style game that is quick to play (10 minutes on a tablet), and doesn't use movable units. I've a couple of active experiments in-progress around this idea. One, called "Domination" based on a game I wrote in the 80s as a teenager, and another, called "The Blight" based loosely on H.P.Lovecraft's story "The Color out of Space". But this was the opportunity to take the gameplay in a different direction and experiment with the idea of synergies between neighbouring locations, an idea that I enjoyed from both Girls Like Robots and Reus.

The result was mixed. The problem with this kind of game is that it takes some engine programming, which meant I was struggling for time in the jam to play with the synergies and actually make the game playable. Still, it is another experiment, and things like the tile flipping code might come in handy in other places. Other than for curiosity, I can't really recommend it as a gaming experience.

The game was created in Unity, with the excellent TextMesh Pro package.
